Gene Mueller

GeneEugene “Gene” Mueller is the Vice-President of The Gem Shop, Inc. and lives in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Gene developed an interest in rocks as a young boy while visiting his grandfather in Minnesota. This interest grew into lapidary skill over the years. While teaching art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he saw the need the art metal students had for polished stones. He began cutting agates and jaspers to fill this need.
Gene started The Gem Shop in 1971 in his basement. As his collection of rocks grew, Gene moved The Gem Shop into its own building. The Gem Shop has the largest inventory of rock in the midwest!
Gene is a life-long agate and jasper collector. From early on Gene was interested in getting his hands dirty mining and collecting rock. He taught himself to use the heavy equipment and explosives necessary to mine the different materials. As a result Gene is one of the foremost experts in agate-mining.
While Gene is well known for mining Morrisonite Jasper, he has also had the privilege to mine a variety of agates including Agua Nueva, Coyamito, and Graveyard Point Plume Agates. He also is responsible for bring the much loved Laguna Agate from the Alianza claim to market. When asked what his favorite agate is Gene responds, “The next one,” referring to his love of the hunt and knowledge that each agate he uncovers is his favorite for that moment.
