Jens was born in Jena, Thuringia in Germany. After finishing his primary education and serving in the army, he studied mineralogy and geochemistry at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. Jens finished his Ph.D. thesis on industrial high-purity quartz raw materials.
Afterwards, he worked for some years for the glass and ceramics industry and participated in various scientific projects. Since 2005, Dr. Götze has worked as a professor of Technical Mineralogy in the Department of Mineralogy of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Saxony, Germany). Since beginning his doctoral thesis, Jens has intensively dealt with quartz and silica minerals. He has done active research on the subject of agates and agate formation and has published a number of articles in this field.
Although he has dealt with agates from a scientific point of view, he also enjoys collecting agates. His connections to both the agate collector community and the scientific community have provided him with the opportunity to see a variety of agate formations worldwide and to get an impression on the beauty of this specific “product” of nature.
